Walberg Pumping More Empty Rhetoric on Gas in Jackson Today

WALBERG PUMPING MORE EMPTY RHETORIC ON GAS IN JACKSON TODAY
Congressman more interested in photo ops than real compromise on energy legislation

BATTLE CREEK—Today Congressman Tim Walberg (R-Exxon) will be pumping gas at the Citgo station on Cooper Street in Jackson. For more than a month, Walberg has held similar photo ops throughout the 7th district to highlight his “concern” about high gas prices, even though he has consistently voted against legislation that would offer relief at the pump for Michigan drivers, and just yesterday dismissed a comprehensive energy proposal as a “gimmick.”

Zack Pohl, spokesman for Congressional candidate Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek), issued the following statement:

"The only thing Tim Walberg will be pumping in Jackson today is more empty rhetoric about gas prices. After taking more than $20,000 in campaign contributions from Big Oil companies like Exxon and Conoco and voting consistently against legislation that would offer relief at the pump for Michigan drivers, it’s clear that the Congressman is more interested in photo ops than real solutions to our nation’s energy crisis. Michigan drivers need results, not more excuses.”

This past weekend, Democratic Congressional leadership signaled a forthcoming vote on a comprehensive energy bill that includes offshore drilling with appropriate safeguards, a temporary release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, consumer protections against excessive speculation, and provisions to force energy companies to use more renewable technologies. Congressman Walberg immediately dismissed this sensible, comprehensive approach as a “gimmick” in a press release sent out yesterday.

Background:

• Since taking office, Tim Walberg has voted against bills to end tax breaks for Big Oil (HR 6), curb excessive energy speculation (HR 6604), expand drilling in the 68 million acres of land already leased by the oil companies (HR 6515), and a temporary release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (HR 6578).
